First of all, having a route towards Skagway would make Juneau more accessible. A girl in my class says, "There should be a road 'cause kids need a way to get out of this boring city every once in a while!" There are so many methods of transportation, yet one of the earliest modes are lacking in this city, meaning we aren't accessible enough. I know that I have always wanted to go on a road trip, but I've never had the chance because my mom doesn't want to take the ferry to take us to Skagway or Haines, and then drive to Canada. I went around asking some Juneauites, and 69% said they would like a road out of Juneau.
Along with being more accessible, a road would ensure that Juneau be kept as the capital city. Many people are often attempting to shift the capital elsewhere, mostly cities closer to Anchorage. With Sarah Palin as governor, many people believe she wants to move the capital to Palmer, or Wasilla. Surely, with a road to keep us linked we can continue being the capital of Alaska. Fact: Juneau is the only capital in the nation that isn't connected by road. With that being said, Juneau would be kept as capital because of this road.
Furthermore, the Skagway-Juneau Road will be good for the economy. "Juneau is small and the cost of living here is crazy!" says another one of my classmates, who is up for a new road. A new road would mean cheaper prices, because of the new businesses that might decide to move in. It would mean less expensive shipping, and it would take as much time as on boat anyway. Schools would save on traveling costs. We would have more tourists, and if you're one of those who are always whining saying, Juneau will be overcrowded: they're just tourists, and they will leave eventually, it's not like they're going to stay forever. Tourism is always a good thing; it brings in lots of money. With all the visitors and new people, many will go somewhere and say how awesome Juneau is; that will bring a lot of money and build up a good reputation for the best state capital: Juneau.
The Juneau-Skagway Road should be built. We could go to Canada, Lower 48, and Anchorage for road trips. Your hometown will be proud to stay as the capital. We won't be driven out of this great city because we can't afford it. We could have all that for only a road, so let's go build that highway!
