Holiday openings available at childcare center
SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium
SITKA - Need to have someone take care of your child while you run errands, go to the doctor's office or shop for the holidays?

The SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium Child Care Center expects to have several drop-in openings during the upcoming holiday season.

The SEARHC Child Care Center is a nonprofit, state-licensed childcare facility located at 1205 Seward Ave. (behind the SEARHC Community Health Services building).

The center can accept children from age 2 months (with first set of immunizations) up to 11 years old.

The center is licensed to handle as many as 38 children, but there are some limits on how many can be accepted in each age group. Most of the openings are expected to be in the 3-5 year age bracket.

The center is open to all community families, though the majority of children at the center are from SEARHC employee families.

Children are accepted on a space-available basis and there is no preference given to SEARHC employees. There usually are five or six child care workers on staff, and three of the workers have at least 20 years each in the child care field.

The center also holds an ongoing preschool for ages 3-5 that takes place from 9:30 a.m.-noon Mondays through Fridays. The childcare program emphasizes health, nutrition, physical activity, safety and social experiences.

The center provides an environment geared toward strong early childhood development, with emphasis on language and speech skills, motor skills, concept formation and life skills. The center features a recently expanded play yard.

There are monthly and daily rates depending on the age of the child.

The rates are based on part time (up to five hours a day, either 7 a.m.-noon or 12:30-5:30 p.m.) or full time (up to nine hours a day).

Drop-in availability is arranged at least one day in advance, when possible.

There is an hourly drop-in rate for children who aren't regulars (with a minimum of two hours) and the hourly fee must be prepaid at the time the child is dropped off. The SEARHC Child Care Center is open from 6:45 a.m.-5:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays, with some holiday closures.
