Auto tech program gains national recognition
University of Alaska Southeast
The UAS Automotive Technology program is the Alaska winner, and National runner-up, for the Automotive Industry Planning Council Award of Excellence for Post-Secondary programs.

UAS Automotive Technology department head Tony Martin accepted the award Nov. 29, at the Association for Career and Technical Education Convention in Atlanta, Ga.

"Tony is dedicated to making the UAS automotive technology program an area of excellence for UAS," Said UAS Dean of Career Education Karen Schmitt.

"It is wonderful that Tony and the program are being recognized on both a regional and national level."

The UAS Automotive Technology program was awarded two vehicles in recognition of its achievement; a 2005 Dodge Magnum R/T and a 2006 Honda Accord.

The value of the vehicles is more than $60,000.

The new cars will provide state of the art technology for helping to train students.

Getting two new cars is really the best part about winning this award," Martin said.

"It's important for our students to gain first-hand knowledge of the latest technology; this is going to help make our graduates highly qualified technicians upon entering the job market."
