The Nugget Alaskan Outfitter is a locally owned and operated business in the Nugget Mall, featuring clothing, footwear and gear for the people of Southeast Alaska.
NAO is actually a descendant of the Nugget Department Store, the first business to open in the Nugget Mall in 1974 in a portion of the space currently occupied by Petco and Office Max. In 1987 everything in the department store was closed out except for the men's department, which was wheeled down the hallway into two-thirds of the space currently occupied by NAO. At that time the new store was known as Nugget Men's Store and featured traditional menswear like shirts, slacks, ties and sport coats in addition to much of the work clothing that remains today. Over the years the slacks and ties have been replaced by outdoor clothing and gear and by the addition of women's clothing.
The dozen or so employees of NAO strive to balance providing personal service with the demands of maintaining a well-stocked and organized store. And while there are new faces from time to time on the staff, NAO is fortunate to have a core group that has worked with store for decades (a couple of the old timers can even remember working at the Department Store). That sort of perspective and experience is one of the strengths of NAO and keys to its success and longevity.
Another strength of NAO is a product selection tuned specifically for Southeast Alaska. Take, for instance, the selection of raingear that is quite possibly the greatest in the world. Typically you will find either recreational-type waterproof/breathable outerwear, or you will find heavy-duty industrial strength PVC foul weather gear. NAO has all that, and everything in between. In a world increasingly full of "content," shopping at NAO can serve as a great filter for what works around here. Product is at NAO because it has proven itself to function in Southeast Alaska. If it doesn't work, it doesn't sell and it doesn't hang around.
Possibly the greatest strength of NAO is the relationship with our community. It is a huge supporter of many community events, auctions, school projects, the arts, athletic events, Little League teams and so on. In return NAO enjoys not only the support of the community, but the genuine concern and appreciation of the community. It's a great vibe.
