The Juneau Chamber of Commerce, Juneau Yacht Club, Juneau Radio Center and CBJ Docks and Harbors announce sponsorship of the 2013 harbors Christmas Boat Lighting Contest. Vessels, in good standing, at Aurora Harbor, Harris Harbor, Mike Pusich Douglas Harbor, Don Statter Harbor Facility and Fisherman's Bend Marina are all eligible. Last year 25 vessels competed for cash and prizes, an increase of twenty percent in participation over the inaugural contest in 2011.
A minimum of $1,000 in cash will be distributed to the top three winners in a single "Open Category" this year. The winners will be announced on Dec. 16 and recognized at the December 17th Yacht Club Meeting which includes a prime rib dinner.
Judging will be conducted by sponsor representatives on the 13th and 14th of December. Criteria will include creativity, detail, Christmas spirit, luminescence and imagination. To ensure vessels are not missed, participants are requested to register with an email to Teena_Scovill@ci.juneau.ak.us by 4 p.m. on Dec. 12.
Richard Burns of the Juneau Radio Center, which is providing the cash incentive indicated "that boaters aren't necessarily in it for the money - but certainly the bonus of prizes increases the competitive and fun spirit this contest provides to the Juneau community."
Last year's contest winners were Dan Gowdy with the M/V Lady Irene and Donald Kalk with the F/V Osprey both in Aurora Harbor. Each was awarded $300 cash and prizes for their efforts.
