Capital City Celebrations sponsored a recipe contest for a 50th Anniversary of Statehood cookbook to be compiled in 2009. A judging and awards ceremony took place during the Dec. 5 Gallery Walk at Heritage Coffee in downtown Juneau.
Velja Elstad won first prize in the side dish category for her Alaska Smoked Salmon Chowder. Kaysa Korpela won first prize in the dessert category for her Pear Cream Alexander. Tom West won the main dish category for his Crustacean Pepper Pot.
The finalists were Susan Oldacres and Kristen Josserand in the main dish category; Joyce Kitka and Jenny Farley in the side dish category; and Kristen Josserand and Helena Zimmerman in the dessert category.
