Opera To Go presents world premieres

JUNEAU - Opera To Go will present a pair of world premiere one-act operas with four performances over the next two weekends. "The Last Leaf" and "The Gift of the Magi" by Michael Chordas will be performed at 8 p.m. on Dec. 12, 18 and 19 and at 3 p.m. on Dec. 20 at the Thunder Mountain High School Auditorium.

Both operas are based on short stories by nineteenth century author O. Henry, famous for his surprise endings.

"The Last Leaf" tells of a young girl whose lingering pneumonia lessens her will to live. She decides to cling to life until the last leaf drops from a dying vine outside of her window. But her neighbor, a frustrated artist, makes the ultimate sacrifice to save her.

"The Gift of the Magi" is the story of a husband and wife who secretly make personal sacrifices to provide gifts for each other for Christmas.

Featured vocalists include Tiffany G. Hanson, Wade Rogers, Brett Crawford, Cathy Pashigian, Eve Dillingham, Brett Crawford, Patricia Hull, Rebekah Grimes and Dan and Kathleen Wayne. The Amalga Chamber Orchestra will be led by conductor William Todd Hunt.
