Western Steller sea lion numbers continue to drop

ANCHORAGE - A federal survey shows that Western Alaska's Steller sea lion population is continuing to decline.

Only 43 sea lions were counted this year at Buldir Island during a summer survey, reported the Associated Press. Researchers counted twice that many four years ago. Eastern populations remain stable, with an estimated population between 45,000 and 51,000 animals.
