Organizations unite to brging Family Nights to Ketchikan
Association of Education of Young Children would like to first, thank the fine staff at the Children's Library for their over-whelming support of Family Nights in Ketchikan. As an outside looking in it is just amazing how special our local community support is throughout the year. The amazing collaboration and volunteer efforts of different agencies is allowing the program to go on. Various speakers are volunteering their time from: School Principals, Teachers, Rapture and Aquarium specialists, Coast Guard, Ketchikan General Hospital DayCare staff, Early Educators, Business Owners, and many others have come out to help us continue this monthly event.

This month changed gears with special guests from the U.S. Coast Guard. Joanna Prijic and Robert Pease did a splendid job talking about difference aspects of fire and boat safety. They both said this was their first presentation.

AYEC's goal is to have a sustainable monthly event for younger aged children in our community, and to encourage each of us to remember how important simply reading is to their development. Getting kids at an early age started in reading is vital to their success. In the months to come we expect to have activities on cooking, healthy eating. banking, boating, construction, and many more. AEYC also conducts the Easter Egg Hunt in the plaza in partnership with Ketchikan Youth Court.

Recently, in a partnership with Safe Schools and Healthy Schools and First Book we are able to continue this monthly event with their added support of volunteers and supplies. Cape Fox Hotel/Restaurant, Holland American Cruise Lines, and Wal-Mart have also stepped up to help the continuation of AEYC events in Ketchikan.

Family Night continues to have close to 120 people month take part. It takes close to 15 volunteer people in the preparation, and planning. AEYC is grateful to the folks involved in this event for volunteering extra time to make it happen. Mark your calendar for 5:30-7:30 p.m. for the third Thursday of the month (unless it is a holiday) at the Ketchikan Public Library. The event is free, but tickets must be picked up to attend due to space limitations.
