JUNEAU - The Soul Street Dance Company of Houston, Texas will perform Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m. at the Juneau Douglas High School auditorium.
Soul Street brings the rhythmic sophistication of Debussy, Vivaldi and even BB King toe-to-toe with hip-hop styles and break dance bravado. This four-member, all-male dance company knows how to move from their knuckles all the way down to their toes. Soul Street fuses hip-hop styles of breakin', poppin' and lockin' with modern dance and a spark of theatrical flair.
Soul Street was created by former members of fly dance company and is unique for their way of incorporating different styles of street dance. Under the direction of Javier Garcia and Rock Williams, Soul Street presents a new era in dance. While pushing the artistic boundaries in street dance they maintain the true essence of the culture.
The company dates back to 1996, as a self-taught street crew competing for recognition in the Houston area. They quickly caught the attention of the artistic director for Fly Dance Company. This is where they became the company's principal dancers and helped turn Fly into a national and international touring sensation.
Soul Street concerts consist of high-energy movement accompanied by an eclectic mix of music ranging from hip-hop to classical. The show is suitable for audiences of all ages.
In conjunction with their concerts, Soul Street offers educational and outreach performances.
The concert is presented by the Juneau Arts & Humanities Council and Sponsored by University of Alaska Southeast. Refreshments at intermission support Juneau Dance Unlimited.
