Thompson receives national award
Gastineau Community School
Jennifer Thompson, a kindergarten and first grade teacher at Gastineau Community School, has been named the 2006 recipient of the Outstanding Early Childhood Practitioner Award.

This national award, sponsored by the National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators, is designed to recognize excellence in teaching as well as leadership and professionalism in teacher training.

Thompson has been teaching primary students in the Juneau School District for the past eight years, the last three at Gastineau School.

A little over a year ago, the University of Alaska, Southeast hired Jennifer to assist Dr. Marjorie Fields in teaching early childhood education graduate classes.

Citing Thompson's excellence both as a classroom teacher and as a teacher educator, Fields nominated Thompson for the NAECTE award in the spring of 2006.

After extensive review of nominations from across the country, Jennifer was selected to receive the prestigious NAECTE award; she attended the NAECTE awards ceremony in Atlanta, Ga. on Nov. 8.
