Dance Weekend to benefit individual artist grant fund

Juneau Arts and Humanities Council brings professional ballroom dancer Rachel Lidskog and her dance partners Jay Gilberg and Adam Hamilton to town for a weekend of dancing to kick off the holiday season and raise funds to benefit local artists.

Drawing on the popular Dancing with the Stars television program and the local enthusiasm for dance, JAHC invited six local celebrities to take dancing lessons from local instructors to showcase specialty dances at the "Dancing with the Stars" event.

The event takes place at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11 at Centennial Hall.

The evening kicks off with exhibitions of merengue, tango, foxtrot, and swing dancing by students from Auke Bay, Glacier Valley, and Mendenhall River schools.

Rachel and her partners will offer exhibition of professional dancing, and the evening concludes with dancing for all to the music of the Thunder Mountain Big Band.

Local "stars" Susan Burke, Laraine Derr, Charla Wright, Bruce Botelho, John Pugh, and Marc Wheeler are studying dance with local instructors, Tim Adair, Antonio Diaz, Heather Haugland, Dan and Lorinda Kassner, Alysia McClain, and Shane Wirtz.

Wirtz is also the dance master for the elementary school dancers.

The weekend begins with workshops in Foxtrot, East Coast Swing/Jitterbug on Thursday; Waltz, Rumba.

It continues with a review on Friday, all at the Vallery JRC/the Alaska Club.

On Sunday, there will be workshops in Night Club 2-step, West Coast Swing, and Argentine Tango.
