Photo: Magistrate sworn in at Angoon
Local resident Elaine Kookesh-Jack has been named the new part-time magistrate for Angoon. Presiding Judge Patricia Collins and Area Court Administrator Neil Nesheim interviewed several applicants for the Angoon job. Kookesh-Jack was selected because of her diverse background, her ties to the Angoon community, and her commitment to keep a fair and open mind when hearing cases.

Kookesh-Jack started her position July 9. She has completed an intensive training program in Sitka and was informally sworn in as magistrate Sept. 20. She had her formal swearing in Oct. 16. Her father Sen. Albert Kookesh, left, performed the robing honors, joined by her family, including her mother Sally Kookesh, right, community members and court representatives.
