Quilt raffle to benefit Cancer Connection

JUNEAU - Local quilters recently completed a quilt honoring loved ones lost to cancer. The quilt will be raffled off to raise money for the local branch of the Cancer Connection, a nonprofit organization that provides resources and support for those living with cancer and their families. The raffle is sponsored by Martina's Fabric and Women of the Moose Juneau Chapter 439.

The act of creating something in memory of someone lost to cancer is a "labor of love," said Martha Narino-Torres, owner of Martina's fabrics. She added that a project like this "really helps to unite a community. (Cancer) may not touch us all in the same way, but it speaks a language we all understand."

The large lap-size quilt is named "Field of Flowers" and is composed of a beautiful array of floral four-patch blocks against the white latticework background.

Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20, and 350 will be sold. The drawing will be held Nov. 11 at the Juneau Bowling Center, and you need not be present to win. Tickets are available from the Women of the Moose, Martina's Fabric, Annie Kaill's and Hearthside Books. The quilt is on display at Martina's Fabric, located at 5750 Glacier Hwy, Ste E-1.
