Hutch-Hill commissioned as second lieutenant
Walter V. Hutch-Hill graduated from Officer Candidate School at Fort Lewis, Tacoma, Wash., and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army National Guard.

During training, the candidate received "basic soldiering" instruction in leadership, professional ethics, soldier team development, combined arms tactics, weapons defense, squad drill, intelligence, land navigation, field training exercises, maintenance, communications, staff and general military subjects, discipline, and physical training and conditioning. Students utilize acquired skills to function in "leader and follower" positions in squad and platoon-sized elements in a stressful and demanding field environment involving various tactical situations.

Hutch-Hill, a decontamination specialist with four years of military service, is assigned to Headquarters, 3rd Battalion, 297th Infantry, Juneau. He is the son of Raino D. Hill of Hoonah, Alaska, and Laurie M. Cropley of Juneau. His wife, Jenni, is the daughter of Jones P. and Lani S. Hutch of Haines. In 1998, Hutch-Hill graduated from Mount Edgecumbe High School, Sitka.
