Austin, a young Stanford graduate with a promising career as a screenwriter, is paid an unexpected visit by his alcoholic desert-dwelling brother, Lee, while working on a script in their vacationing mother's home. Austin must contend with Lee's volatile, sometimes violently dangerous nature over the course of a few days, and his life is drastically altered as both brothers realize the depth of their relationship and the extent of their similarities.
The cast of True West features Enrique Bravo ("Lee"), Ryan Conarro ("Austin"), Jerry Demmert ("Saul") and Anni Stokes ("Mom").
Bravo resides in New York City and is currently performing in Yeast Nation: The Miracle of Life, his fourth show with Perseverance Theatre. He recently performed in Equus as Nugget and in The Who's Tommy as Cpt. Walker. He also recently performed the role of Romeo in Shake's Romeo and Juliet at Colonial Theatre in Rhode Island.
Conarro appeared recently in "Noises Off" and "Hamlet," both at Perseverance Theatre. His directing credits include Arctic Magic Flute for Opera to GO! and Pippen at Juneau-Douglas High School. He's taught this year in Fairbanks, Nome, Kotzebue, Bethel, Anchorage, and Sitka, as well as in Juneau schools. Ryan's next big arts education projects include a month of faculty development for teachers in the Lower Kuskokwim School District. In March he'll be directing Tides and the Tempest at Glacier Valley School, which will go to Washington, D.C. as part of the Kennedy Center's Creative Ticket award to the school.
Demmert is currently appearing in "Yeast Nation: The Miracle of Life" at Perseverance Theatre. Other Perseverance Theatre credits include Equus, The Who's Tommy, A Question of Mercy, and Hair.
Stokes has been a Perseverance company member for 22 years as an actor, director, and teacher. Her favorite productions include Twelfth Night, The Glass Menagerie, Wooden Breeks, House of Blue Leaves, The Sirens, Baltimore Waltz, The South Wall, Waiting for the Parade, Caucasian Chalk Circle, Our Lady of the Tortilla, and The Greeks. She performed in Sylvia and Wings in Anchorage, directed Sylvia at Pistarkle Theatre on St. Thomas, and founded/performed in Fairbanks Shakespeare Theatre.
Lagundino has directed plays by David Henry Hwang, Amiri Baraka, Diana Son, Suzanne Lori-Parks, and Thornton Wilder, and is the founder and former Artistic Director of Tsunami Theatre Company in Washington, D.C. He most recently directed Topdog/Underdog for Perseverance Theatre Second Stage, and is a member of the Perseverance Theatre Acting Company where he is currently performing in the World Premiere of Yeast Nation: The Triumph of Life. He holds an MFA in Acting with a Secondary Concentration in Directing from The University of Texas at Austin.
