JUNEAU - The Alaska State Museum will be closed on Friday, Oct. 18, in observance of Alaska Day, a state holiday. Alaska Day commemorates the day in 1867 when governance of Alaska was transferred from Russia to the United States.
The museum will resume public hours on Saturday and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday throughout the winter. Discounted winter admission is $3. Visitors 18 years and under are admitted free of charge.
The museum's galleries will gradually close as staff packs objects in preparation for the new State Museum, Library and Archives facility. View the second floor Russian America and Alaska History exhibits as well as play on the kids' ship through Nov. 2, 2013. The second floor art room and temporary galleries will remain open through Jan. 4, 2014.
The eagle tree area and first floor Alaska Native galleries and temporary art exhibits will remain open until the museum closes on Feb. 28, 2014.
The new museum will open its doors in the State Museum, Libraries, and Archives facility during the spring of 2016!
