For the last 21 years, the local contra dance community has sponsored an annual 3-day "Dance and Music Party - D.A.M.P." at the Eagle River United Methodist Camp on Aug. 16-18. It's a weekend filled with music, dancing, workshops, community fun and meals drawing over 60 participants of all ages. Campers even enjoyed a whittling workshop led by Harvey Van Patten! This year we danced to wonderful music from the Carr Family Band from Oregon and caller Jean Gibson-Gorrindo from Los Osos, Calif.
It's our custom to show the guest artists a good time by arranging complimentary tours/gifts from local vendors. We would like to thank Marlis Mayeda of Mt. Robert's Tramway for discounted tram passes and Mark Kelley Photography for gift books and calendars. The guests were most appreciative and enjoyed their Alaska experience and Juneau's hospitality.
Also, many thanks to the amazing efforts and continued support from local contra dancers/organizers whose tireless energies and year-round commitment keeps this event happening. We can always use more help! Special thanks to John and Terry Laskey, Doug and Odette Edgar, Koren Bosworth and family, Jan Caulfield and Tom Paul, Patti Harper, Greg Burger, Justine Emerson and Adrian Slater, Laurie Lamm, Bob Laurie, Susie Kendig, Doug Smith, Beth Leibowitz and Steve Winker, Tom Melville, Ellie Sharman, Harvey Van Patten, Frank and Chris Ramsey and to all the meal captains, bread bakers and volunteers.
This is such a huge effort, it's difficult to thank everyone. We all help to make it happen. This is one of the events that makes Juneau a special place to live! Thank you!
