Flag friends

The Friends of the Flags last weekend took down the 50 state flags that have been flying along Egan Drive between the Juneau Douglas Bridge and Marine Park all summer. Friends (from left, back row) are Michael Orelove, Jim Akins, (front) Steve Byers, Hans Mercer, Jim Carroll, Carl John and Bob Van Slyke.

Since 1978, new flags have been installed each year, sponsored by the Friends of the Flags, a nonprofit group that installs and cares for the flags.

"The Friends of the Flags are saving the used flags from the states affected by the hurricanes, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas, for use by local agencies or individuals for hurricane relief efforts" Orelove said. "The flags that flew all summer in Juneau could be used as the backdrop for a fundraising concert or other event."
