Who's Your Diva? Wendy Byrnes

The Capital City Weekly is featuring contestants every week leading up to Juneau Lyric Opera’s Sept. 23 “Who’s Your Diva” competition and fundraiser. This is the final week of Q&As. Read about the other Divas at capitalcityweekly.com.

The event will take place at Centennial Hall at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6 p.m.). Tickets are sold at the Juneau Arts and Culture Center, Hearthside Books and www.juneauopera.org. Costs $315 for a reserved table for 10, or $35 per ticket (reserved seating). For more info visit www.juneauopera.org.

1. What’s your most memorable performance?

Probably a Christmas concert from college. Maybe the first time I sang a world premiere in Benaroya Hall in Seattle for a Christmas concert, with a few thousand people in the audience. It was pretty magical.

2. How about your embarrassing moment while performing?

I was singing in a high school honor choir when I was sixteen, and I was supposed to sing a high note at the end of a song as a descant part, and my voice cracked and produced this horrible sound… There’s a recording of it somewhere; it’s the worst.

3. Name three singers who have influenced you throughout your singing career.

Judy Garland, Joyce Didonato, and Barbra Streisand.

4. Are there any local performers who inspire you?

There are so many I couldn’t even begin to name them. We have so much talent in this little community.

5. Where’s your favorite place to sing (besides the stage)?

It’s a dead tie between out in nature and really old churches with super live acoustics,

6. If you could burst out in song anywhere you wanted, where would it be?

Somewhere historic, or maybe on a boat out at sea.

7. What’s on your playlist, what’s your jam?

I’m a big classic rock person, but in a more current sense, I listen to a lot of earthy indie stuff. The most listened songs on my lists are almost all by the Fleet Foxes, I’m pretty sure.

8. What are three things you love most about living in Juneau?

The close connection with nature, the people, and the fact that I can work with children, do photography, and perform regularly.

9. You have three sunny days in Juneau… how do you spend your time?

Climbing a mountain, camping, and being out on the water.

10. What’s the number one item on your bucket list?

Everything. I have a lot of things to see and do, I really don’t think I can pick just one thing. Something travel-related in some awesome new corner of the world.
