Who’s Your Diva? Kylynn Renée Machir

The Capital City Weekly is featuring  contestants every week leading up to Juneau Lyric Opera’s Sept. 23 “Who’s Your Diva” competition and fundraiser. This is the fifth week of Q&As. Follow upcoming divas at capitalcityweekly.com and in our print issue.

The event will take place at Centennial Hall at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6 p.m.). Tickets go on sale at the Juneau Arts and Culture Center, Hearthside Books and www.juneauopera.org on Aug. 21. Costs $315 for reserved table for 10, or $35 per ticket (reserved seating). For more info visit www.juneauopera.org.

1. What’s your most memorable performance?

Fundraiser for Juneau Alaska Music Matters. I was so nervous I couldn’t sing but then our beautiful community sang for me and I couldn’t stop crying because it was so beautiful and humbling to have so much support and love.

2. How about your embarrassing moment while performing?

I danced my way off of a stage! Fortunately the stage lights and cast iron table broke my fall.

3. Name three singers who have influenced you throughout your singing career.

I’m a sucker for Ella Fitzgerald, Joni Mitchell, and Laura Marling.

4. Are there any local performers who inspire you?

Taylor Viddic! She is enchanting and genuinely lovely. She has a commanding force.

5. Where’s your favorite place to sing (besides the stage)?

In my car. Passersby and onlookers may find alarm in how vigorously I am singing.

6. If you could burst out in song anywhere you wanted, where would it be?

This does regularly happen everywhere that I am! The Pisa Baptistery - you can create chords with your own voice without using multiphonics.

7. What’s on your playlist, what’s your jam?

Glass Animals, The Dead Weather, Marian Hill and everything else. A big heaping of Rachmaninov.

8. What are three things you love most about living in Juneau?

The mountains, the people, the rain (or plants, I’m a serial plant lady).

9. You have three sunny days in Juneau… how do you spend your time?

Let’s go camping!

10. What’s the number one item on your bucket list?

Touch the sun, lasso the moon, and count the stars.
