Mary Catharine Martin is the new staff writer at the Capital City Weekly. She'll also be writing for the outdoors section at the Juneau Empire.
Martin is new to CCW, but not to Juneau - she worked as the city and education reporter for the Empire in 2009 and 2010. She left to complete a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing (fiction) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she wrote a novel that starts out being about a little girl who runs away from her failed hippie parents in the Brooks Range, ends up being about the girl, her narcissistic, artistic mother, and her orphaned grandmother, and is based in Alaska, Louisiana, and Las Vegas - all places she's lived in the last five years. She's currently on her 159th revision and hopes to send it off to literary-land in the next few months.
She and her boyfriend, Bjorn, love to travel, recently completing a three-month bicycle trip through Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand.
She returned to Juneau in June and has spent the summer hiking, catching a 70-pound halibut, and picking blueberries. She's excited to be back and looks forward to the fall, rain and all.
