Jake Pahlke earns Eagle Scout award

JUNEAU - Jake Pahlke celebrated the achievement of his Eagle Scout award with friends and family on August 21, in a ceremony at Auke Rec shelter. Jake is a senior at JDHS and is a member of Troop 11, sponsored by the Resurrection Lutheran Church.

In his seven years in Boy Scouts he has participated in many community service activities, hikes, campouts, and high adventure outings. His most memorable outings have been the annual Frostbite snow cave trips, climbing Mt Edgecumbe volcano near Sitka, and most recently exploring caves on Prince of Wales Island. The entire troop practiced climbing and rappelling for several months to prepare for that unforgettable trip.

The Eagle Scout is the highest award in Scouting. It requires earning at least 21 merit badges, being an active leader in your troop and completing a significant community service project.

For his Eagle project Jake built a gazebo near Aldersgate Methodist Church on Cinema Drive. The gazebo was made from Hoonah cedar and serves as a memorial to Amy Martin, a close family friend and his third grade teacher. Many people helped with the funding and construction of the gazebo, in particular Dick Williams who taught Jake a lot about woodworking and power tools.
