The American Red Cross of Alaska has mobilized volunteers to assist with emergency needs in the Mat-Su Valley due to severe flooding over the past several days.

Damage assessment teams have traveled into the affected areas and are going door to door talking with families and finding out what their immediate needs are.

"We know of at least two homes that were completely washed away, and of three subdivisions that each had 100 homes that were under water," said David Williams, director of Red Cross emergency response.

Williams went on to state that even with receding waters; many individuals are unable to return to their homes safely.

The initial estimate is 100 families will need help with their emergency needs; however that number can changing and may increase.

With two service centers operating in the communities affected and both Emergency Response Vehicles mobilized the American Red Cross of Alaska is offering meals, snacks and beverages to those in need.

They also have comfort kits and clean-up kits available to all affected.

The American Red Cross of Alaska relies on the generosity of Alaskans in order to help those affected by disasters.

"There is no magic formula to being able to help people," says Shad Engkilterra, Southeast District Director. "Without our communities' donations of time and money, we could not exist."

If you or your business would like to make a donation please visit our web site at or call our office at 463-5713.

You may also mark them as "undesignated" and as soon as we have raised the money need to provide relief for the flood victims, those funds will be able to help in future disasters and other Red Cross programs.

As we help our Mat-Su neighbors, it is a reminder to all of us to have a plan, make a kit and get trained.
