Frederica De Laguna Photograph Collection

The photograph collection of anthropologist Frederica De Laguna, documenting her research in Alaska between 1930 and 1978, is coming to its permanent home at the Historical Collections of the Alaska State Library. The library is located on the Eighth Floor of the State Office Building in downtown Juneau. Freddy, as she was always known, was one of the last students of Franz Boas under whom she earned a doctorate in anthropology from Columbia University in 1933. She worked with many Alaskan communities, most notably Yakutat which was the subject of her 1972 masterwork Under Mount Saint Elias: The History and Culture of the Yakutat Tlingit. Dr. De Laguna died in November of 2004, having willed her extensive photograph collection to the Alaska Historical Collections.
