The Rev. Jesse R. Perry led worship for the first time on Sunday as the new pastor at Northern Light United Church. Perry's continuing message of hope will encourage all to reflect on their faith as disciples, according to a church news release.
Perry, his wife Liz, and their11- year-old son Joel arrived on the M/V Matanuska two weeks ago. Perry grew up in Missouri and comes to Juneau from Farmington Presbyterian Church in Farmington, Mo. A pastor for 25 years, he received a master of divinity degree from San Francisco Theological Seminary, a master of arts degree in English and a bachelor of arts degree in history, both from Southeast Missouri State University. He also studied at the Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Miss. and at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.
Perry's mission outreach included 1996 and 1998 trips to Sweden, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey, Korea, Japan and Canada. A mission trip in 1995 included Greece, Spain and Japan.
Northern Light will celebrate its 31st anniversary Sept. 15. The church staff includes J. Allan MacKinnon, director of music; DJ Lindsay, treasurer; Reneé Moseng, youth worker; Lillian Bennett, office manager; and Walter A. Soboleff, pastor emeritus.
