AT&T Alascom, Conoco Phillips and AK Armed Services YMCA partner to help soldiers communicate with loved ones
AT&T Alascom, a subsidiary of AT&T Inc., and ConocoPhillips today announced donations to the Freedom Calls Foundation. Freedom Calls is also supported locally by the Alaska Armed Services YMCA.

Freedom Calls is a national non-profit organization that provides free video and telephone communication between soldiers who are deployed in Iraq and their families and loved ones here in the U.S., including in Alaska.

The service makes it possible for families to communicate not only on the phone, but to see each other face-to-face with the live video conferencing feature. This technology allows soldiers to be present via live satellite feed for special occasions like the birthday of a spouse or child, an anniversary, or any other memorable event that might otherwise be missed.

AT&T Alascom is supporting Freedom Calls with annual in-kind and equipment donations valued at $10,000 to supply bandwidth, engineering support, software and equipment for video teleconference centers on Elmendorf Air force Base and Fort Richardson.

ConocoPhillips is making a monetary donation of $5,000. The Alaska Armed Services YMCA provided physical space and laptop computers for the video teleconference centers.

"We're proud to support Freedom Calls with the bandwidth and technology to allow service members to feel closer to their loved ones," said Mike Felix, president, AT&T Alascom.

"AT&T Alascom has a long history of supporting the U.S. Armed Forces and their families, and Freedom Calls fits in nicely with our ongoing community efforts."

"ConocoPhillips salutes our service men and women who have committed their lives in the service of our country while being separated from family and friends," said Jim Bowles, president, ConocoPhillips Alaska.

"Freedom Calls provides an opportunity for our Alaska military personnel to stay connected and to share special occasions back home. We are proud to continue our support of Alaska's military families."

"Armed Services YMCA of Alaska has continuously supported our men and women in uniform since 1941 and are proud to partner with AT&T Alascom and ConocoPhillips to keep our families connected during this very stressful period in their lives," said Peter Mulcahy, Executive Director, Armed Services YMCA of Alaska.
