Derby Delight

The Territorial Sportsmen, Inc. board was scheduled to make the final tally of the fish caught in the 68th annual Golden North Salmon Derby on Tuesday, but by press time, the unofficial winner of the derby is Juneau's Max Mielke.

Mielke brought in a 27.9-pound king salmon at 2:44 p.m. Friday, this year's first-place fish so far. Last year's front-runner was a 29.2 pound king salmon reeled in by Juneau's Jody Hass.

This year's first-place winner will receive $10,000 in cash from Territorial Sportsmen; a limousine ride courtesy of Juneau Limousine Service to and from Thursday's Awards Night; a sterling silver 2014 derby buckle from Alaska Bronze Works; one round-trip Alaska Airlines ticket; Alaska Litho boat and truck decals; and a winner's jacket from Capital Embroidery.

Territorial Sportsmen will announce the official winners of the derby during awards night celebrations, 7 p.m. Thursday at Centennial Hall.

So far, the rest of 2014's top eight winners are as follows:

• Second place: Mark Pusich with a 23.9-pound king at 1:10 p.m. Sunday

• Third place: Gerald Voss with a 22.8-pound king at 11:20 a.m. Saturday

• Fourth place: Tanya Nizich with a 22.5-pound king at 1:36 p.m. Saturday

• Fifth place: Jerry Godkin with a 22.4-pound king at 4:18 p.m. Saturday

• Sixth place: Ellie Fitzgerald with a 22.2-pound king at 11:44 a.m. Saturday

• Seventh place: Elizabeth Walatka Hays with a 21.9-pound king at 7:33 a.m. Sunday

• Eighth place: Larry Hays with a 21.3-pound king at 11:50 a.m. Friday

• Ninth place: Brad Smathers with a 21-pound coho at 4:14 p.m. Saturday

• Tenth place: Mark Fitzjarrald with a 20.6-pound king at 12:49 p.m. Sunday
