Sealaska Heritage Institute is sponsoring basketball camps in Juneau and Angoon for students who are Sealaska shareholders or descendants. The purpose is to provide a week of fun but intensive instruction in the fundamentals of basketball while incorporating Tlingit language and culture. The Juneau camp is for kids in grades 6 to 8 and was held 9-4 p.m., July 23-27, at DZ Middle School. The Angoon camp is for kids ages 1-12 and is scheduled 9-4 p.m., Aug. 6-10, at the Angoon City School Gym. "(It's) a Tlinglit language basketball camp, so we are integrating Tlingit language into basketball skills training," said Yarrow Vaara, a Tlingit language specialist with the Sealaska Heritage Institute.
