SEARHC Women's Health hosts 'Rally For The Cure' golf outing
HAINES - The SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) WISEWOMAN and Breast and Cervical Health Programs are teaming up with Valley of the Eagles Golf Links and Driving Range in Haines to host the "Rally For The Cure" Summer Scramble Golf Outing in August.

The "Rally For The Cure" golf tournament takes place starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, at the Valley of the Eagles Golf Links and Driving Range, and it raises money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, the nation's largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to curing breast cancer at every stage. In addition to raising money for the Komen Foundation, the event will be used to promote the upcoming mobile mammogram van visit to Haines on Aug. 28 through Sept. 10 (the van is brought to Haines as part of a partnership between the SEARHC Breast and Cervical Health Program and Bartlett Regional Hospital).

"This is a good way to get out there and enjoy a healthy activity with others and support breast cancer research," SEARHC WISEWOMAN/Breast and Cervical Health Program Health Educator Pam Sloper said. "Both men and women are affected by breast cancer, so it is a good cause for everyone."

Teams are forming now for the tournament. The format is nine holes of golf with three golfers to a coed team (players can make their own teams or be assigned one). Every team member must use their tee ball twice, winter rules apply, and there is a prize for the longest putt. "A" level players must use the blue tees, men use the white, and women and children hit from the red markers.

The cost is $35 per golfer, with the fee broken down so $20 of the fee goes to Komen Foundation, $10 goes for half-price green fees and $5 for prizes. There is a $25 fee for walkers and caddies, with $20 of the fee going to the Komen Foundation and $5 for prizes. While it isn't necessary to pre-register, it is appreciated so the golf course knows how many tee times to set aside for the tournament. A full-service pro shop with club and cart rentals is available, and out-of-town teams are encouraged.
