The common Alaskan wildflower fireweed, shown here near Eagle Beach outside of Juneau, blooms from the bottom up. For many, the progression of the blooms up the stalk mirrors the progression of summer, reflected in the popular saying, "When the fireweed turns to cotton, summertime is long forgotten." As of last week, this stalk suggests we still have some summer left.
