Alaska Credit Union League sponsors scholarships for Alaska Business Week

JUNEAU - The Alaska Credit Union League is the newest sponsor of the upcoming Alaska Business Week program to be held at the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus August 8-14. As part of their sponsorship, the League is providing ten scholarships for Alaska high school students from the Anchorage area, Fairbanks, Juneau, Kenai, Kodiak and Interior Alaska.

The weeklong discovery-learning program is a hands-on leadership training experience specifically designed for high school students. Whether students knows what they will be doing after high school, or are still considering all the options, this program increases awareness of their skills and capabilities, and helps them to develop their focus in so many ways. The program involves business leaders directly as mentors for the student companies.

Competing with other companies, students gain hands-on management skills as they strategize their production, marketing and finance decisions, as well as respond to issues pertaining to personnel, the environment and corporate responsibility. This program transforms students as they gain confidence in themselves when facing real life business challenges. At the end of the week, students defend their companies in front of a panel of business leaders, and produce a product or service to be presented to potential "stockholders" for investment purposes.

Thanks to two recent sponsors, free round-trip transportation is available to Fairbanks from Anchorage on the Alaska Railroad so students can participate in Alaska Business Week. In addition, ERA Alaska has offered 20 round-trip tickets from the communities they serve throughout Alaska, and a 25 percent discount for any additional tickets after the 20 are awarded.

Tuition for the weeklong program is $325, which covers housing, food, program materials and activity fees. A total of ten League scholarships will be awarded to students from the Anchorage area, Fairbanks, Juneau, Kenai, Kodiak and Interior Alaska.

The application deadline is July 31. Forms and details can be found at the Alaska State Chamber website, www.alaskachamber.com.
