Civic engagement through giving
American Red Cross
The month of July is a great time to be outdoors.

With beautiful weather, great fishing and wonderful hiking opportunities, we become preoccupied with enjoying our summer fun.

Knowing that winter is coming, Alaskans take advantage of every warm day.

For the American Red Cross, as well as many other non-profits, this time of year is difficult. While non-profits are still providing vital services to our communities, donations to support those services fall to a yearly low.

There are many ways each of us can help our favorite non-profit group, the most important one being to send a check.

By making a donation today, you are not only helping support the year round services that they offer to your community but you also receive the same tax deduction that you receive when donating in December.

Some other ways to help out and get others involved would be to talk to your employer and see if they will match your donations.

Have a garage sale with all proceeds going to your favorite non-profit, or ask your church to dedicate a percentage of the monthly offerings to a different non-profit every month.

Make donating a family event.

Involving children in fund-raising and giving not only allows you to spend quality time with them

It also helps to instill in them a sense of community and compassion.

Whenever a child delivers a gift from their piggy bank, non-profit staff is sure to make a big deal about it.

Western Auto Marine is helping local non-profits in Juneau by tying the TAKU 105 Days of Summer boat giveaway promotion to an event from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, July 29.

Last year they had 20 booths with food, games and information; this year they expect even more.

The American Red Cross of Alaska Southeast District will be present with first aid kits and three-day preparedness kits for sale as well as other great items.

The Boy's and Girl's Club will also be there with bumper stickers and many others will be on hand with information and may even have some goodies for sale as well.
