KETCHIKAN -Kari Lundgren will lead workshops on Sacred Harp Singing, a haunting form of four part a capella hymn singing with deep roots in the American south. Many of the tones and melodies come from Elizabethan English and Scottish/Irish folk music. Lundgren has practiced Shape Note singing for over 10 years and directs a Shape Note singing group in Sitka.This workshop will address the history and basics of Shape Note singing. Participants will leave the class with a core of songs sung and enjoyed. Workshop materials are provided, and no experience is necessary. The Shape Note workshop at Sugar Hill Community Hall begins July 18 with documentary "Awake My Soul" and dessert potluck from 7:00 - 9:30 p.m., followed by a workshop for singers on July 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with a catered lunch, and concludes on Sunday, July 20 with a workshop and potluck dinner.
