Aging in Place: SAIL offers free home surveys in Wrangell and Petersburg

Would you or someone you care about like to receive a free home survey to find out about assistive living equipment or home modifications that might make living at home easier and safer?

Is hearing a challenge? Vision? Balance? Grip? Walking? Bathing? Cooking? Something else? There are many solutions available to make life easier, right where you live.

Southeast Alaska Independent Living (SAIL) in Juneau is sending a HomeMAP team to Wrangell July 22-24 and Petersburg July 26-28 to offer this service. HomeMAP (Home Modifications for Aging in Place) is SAIL's new program designed to help older people and people who experience disabilities fine-tune their homes and apartments to meet their specific needs now and for the future. SAIL's team is trained in the ADA and other accessibility standards. In addition, they are knowledgeable about assistive living products.

The one-hour home visit will result in a free written report with pictures, diagrams and suggested assistive products. This report can be useful when planning do-it-yourself projects, for case managers and for working with contractors who may be hired to perform the modifications.

It's never too soon to make our homes safer and our daily lives easier for us as we age, as well as to make our homes more visitable by friends and family.

The HomeMAP program is partially funded by a generous grant from First Bank.

For more information and to schedule a free HomeMAP survey, contact SAIL Aging in Place Specialist Linni Esther at 907-586-4920 or lesther@sailinc.org before July 20.
