PETERSBURG - Petersburg's first ever Farmer's Market took place Saturday, June 5. For months it was the talk around town, as board members worked diligently behind the scenes and excited residents wondered what was in store. Turns out it was worth the wait.
"Handmade and Homegrown... Supporting Local Growers and Artists," says The Market flyer, which is eco-friendly enough to be printed on recycled paper. Market-goers were given just that, a lush array of local "green" agriculture and craft. Seedlings served in a half-egg shell, handmade pottery and glassware, ornamental plants, and exquisite jewelry to name a few.
The Petersburg Indian Association has donated use of their ANB hall building to help the market come to fruition. Tables filled the hall along with venders, locals and some tourists. There was a steady stream of visitors throughout the day. Barb Rugo herself was a visitor, coming from Wrangell with her and her husband Mike's glassware and crafts.
"The response was just fantastic! It was so well-organized and festive for being the first-time," Rugo said.
Rugo heard about the market from Wrangell's Chamber of Commerce newsletter, and she is already spreading the word to other talented Wrangell artists and connoisseurs. For venders considering participating, Rugo says not to worry about the logistics. Sarah Wagstaff, Market president, was very helpful and had all paperwork available for her when she arrived.
"I felt very welcome and I'd love to do it again," Rugo said.
The next market will be Saturday, July 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the ANB hall.
"We're hoping for even more (products) next time since greens and home-baked goods did really well," said board member Tausha Sperl.
At the first market, Sperl sold seafood chowder with fresh spelt bread, and her 11-year-old daughter, Kelsa, served up bags of organic popcorn.
So many diverse wares, yet still similar. Local, sustainable, hand-made, organic. Bettering the community, one market at a time.
