Once a month, Juneau galleries, museums and shops stay open late and host show and exhibit openings, artist meet-and-greets and more. This month's "Second Friday" gallery walk will be held Friday, July 9 from 4:30 to 7 p.m.
Following is information about events available as of presstime. To have your event listed here next month, e-mail details to editor@capweek.com no later than one week prior.
Annie Kaill's, 244 Front St.
Annie Kaill's will not have a featured guest artist this month, but the gallery will be open for the event with appetizers and their wonderful selection of artwork, pottery, and more.
The Canvas, 223 Seward St.
The Canvas will feature recent paintings by Plein Rein during the month of July.
Plein Rein is a collection of kindred spirits who meet Saturday mornings - rain, shine, snow or sleet - and usually get out to paint en plein air. The group has been meeting for nearly a decade. Friendships have been forged while traveling to Italy, Turkey and Washington state, and during an annual weekend trek to live and breathe art at the Shrine of St Therese. Plein Rein enjoys sharing their recent landscapes done in watercolor, pastels, acrylics and oils.
Plein Rein currently meets at the A&P (Foodland) solarium at 9 a.m. Saturday mornings and decides where to go from there. Interested artists, budding or seasoned, are always welcome to join the group for a Saturday morning outing. A notice of where the group is painting is usually left on the phone booth if you happen to get there late.
Juneau Arts & Culture Center, 350 Whittier St.
The Juneau Arts & Humanities Council Presents "Contemporary Traditions," a partnership collection of Northwest Coast wood carvings by local artists Ray Watkins of Juneau and Duane Bosch of Hoonah. Working primarily in the style of the northern Tlingit tradition, and inspired by the power and beauty of nature, Watkins and Bosch have carved a series of masks, rattles, boxes, and panels, which are a potent reflection of their love for this ancient and beautiful art form. Over 40 new works as well as select pieces from private collections will be on display for the month of July.
The Juneau Artist Market will also take place on the JACC lawn (or in the JACC hall if it rains), in conjunction with the July 9 gallery reception.
Juneau Artists Gallery, Senate Building, 175 S. Franklin St.
Les Howard is the featured artist at the Juneau Artists Gallery during July. Howard specializes in turnings from locally harvested and grown woods such as Douglas maple, willow, red alder, mountain ash, lilac and rhododendron.
Woodturning is a form of woodworking which uses a lathe to rotate the wood while it is being cut. Woodturning differs from most other forms of woodworking in that the wood is moving while a stationary tool is used to cut and shape it.
Howard's turnings include small and medium vessels, pens and pencils, and bottle stoppers. New this year is "scrap" jewelry, earrings and pendants formed into different shapes from scraps of wood, generally demonstrating an interesting grain pattern.
