Holland America Line's Oosterdam will be bringing over 300 square dancers from the 61st National Square Dance Convention to Juneau on July 4th. While in Juneau, they will be dancing at Centennial Hall and are inviting Juneau residents to join them. Prior to their scheduled afternoon dance, many of the dancers will also be participating in Juneau's annual 4th of July Parade.
This group of dancers sailed to Alaska from Seattle on July 1, after having attended their national convention in Spokane; which expects over 5,000 square dancers.
Sailing with the group will be celebrated caller, Tony Oxendine.
"We look forward to spending the 4th of July in Alaska's capital and hope to meet many residents at our afternoon dance," said Rick Ryan, 61st NSDC cruise director. "Bringing a world renowned caller like Tony to Juneau will be a treat for all dancers." (see www.tonyoxendine.com)
The dance will be held at Centennial Hall on July 4th from 2-5 p.m. Local dancers are welcome to join for a $5.00 per person admission at the door. Seating for viewing will also be available at no charge.
Any local Juneau square dancers that would like to march and dance with the 61st NSDC dancers in the parade may join them at the parade formation area (W. 8th and Egan Drive) at 10 a.m. Red, white and blue square dance attire is desirable for the parade. The dance at Centennial Hall will be casual attire.
The 61st NSDC Alaska Cruise is being organized by Azumano Travel of Portland, Ore.
