Petersburg celebrates Fourth of July, 100th birthday

The Fourth is coming, the Fourth is coming! Independence Day comes on a Sunday this year, which is perfect for a weekend getaway to Alaska's Little Norway. Petersburg is holding a year-long anniversary celebration as it turns 100 years old. That means special centennial festivities on July 3-4.

Southeast's fast ferry, the M/V Fairweather is scheduled to depart Juneau at 8 a.m. on July 3, arriving Petersburg a short four hours later. Downtown will be a bustle of concessions, craft booths, and games of all kinds. According to 4th of July Chair and Centennial committee member, Ryan McFarland, Saturday's games will include blindfold rowboat, toad races, as well as a local favorite, the herring toss.

"The feel is truly that of a small-town celebration," McFarland said. "Trikes racing down the street, an egg toss, rubber boots mounted to boards for a team event... capped off with a log roll in the harbor."

Events are spread out over the two days and a detailed schedule will be viewable downtown.

McFarland says the celebration "is an event for families." Everything really is within short walking distance and most activities are free, so dress for the weather and enjoy it all at your fingertips.

The M/V Columbia departs Petersburg Sunday evening, putting you back in Juneau just in time for work Monday morning. There, the "homework" is done. For big fun in a small town, let Petersburg treat you to some Norwegian hospitality for your 4th of July weekend.
