June 19 marked the 147th birthday of Dr. Jose Rizal, national hero of the Phillipines, who led the charge in gaining Philippine independence from Spanish rule. Dr. Rizal was a prolific poet, essayist and novelist. Members of the Filipino Community, Inc. in Juneau gathered at the bust of Dr. Rizal in Manila Square on South Franklin Street to celebrate his birthday.
