It takes a fool to run the streets at midnight - and that's just what is needed for the annual Southeast Alaska Independent Living fund-raiser.

The Holland American Presents Only Fools Run at Midnight event will be held at 11:59 p.m. Saturday, July 1 in Juneau at Centennial Hall and in Sitka at Fire Hall and at 11:50 p.m. Monday, July 3, in Ketchikan at the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center.

"I've grown up doing it, and it's a staple here in Juneau," said Juneau event organizer Tristan Knutson-Lombardo. "Everyone runs through the streets and dress up in crazy costumes and have a lot of fun. It's one of the biggest road races in Juneau."

Cost for the event is $15 in advance and $20 the day of the race for adults age 15 and older, $8 in advance and $10 the day of the race for children age 14 and under and $40 in advance or $50 the day of the race for families of four. Centipedes, which consist of a team of five or more people connected in some way, costs the number of youth multiplied the fee plus the number of adults multiplied the fee.

"It goes to a great cause," Knutson-Lombardo said. "It's also a fun event. You're going to see a lot of people you know, and it's safe."

Volunteers also are needed to help with the event.

"We're looking for people. Either come out and run or come out and volunteer," Knutson-Lombardo said.
