Photo: Maiden voyage
Hildegard Regele (front left), Bob Sylvester (rear left), Marcus Eriksen (center), Beth Peluso (front right) and Carol Anderson (rear right) take the plastic bottle Viking ship "Plastic Poison" on its maiden voyage in Auke Bay boat harbor on June 6th, 2007. The "Plastic Poison" will sail between Juneau and Douglas on the 4th of July to raise awareness of the large quantity of plastics in oceans, which do not biodegrade and will persist for hundreds of years. The ship is about 16 feet long and made of hundreds of plastic soda and water bottles, with the sail hand-stitched out of polyester (plastic-based) shirts, and the pedals made of a used metal sign and crutches.
