Family Fishing Day to be held at Twin Lakes

For the CCW

JUNEAU - The Juneau-Gastineau Rotary Club, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, and the U.S. Forest Service will be sponsoring Family Fishing Day at the Lake to be held at Twin Lakes on Saturday, June 13. Fishing will start at 10 a.m., games will start at 11 a.m. and hot dogs, chips and pop available for sale beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Sponsors this year include Bullwinkle's, the CBJ, Behrends Mechanical, DIPAC, Northern Sales, Odom Company - Coca Cola Juneau, Super Bear, Territorial Sportsmen, Western Auto, the U.S. Forest Service, and Valentine's Coffee House.

Rotary will have affordable lunch items such as hot dogs, soda pop and chips for sale to help raise money for the many projects they sponsor within the community and throughout the Rotary world. Face painting will be available for the kids starting around 11 a.m.

ROTARACT, the local young adult's Rotary group, will have exciting free games in which children can participate such as sack races, a fishing game and a bean bag toss with prizes for the winners.

Fish and Game is working with the event sponsors to help teach kids about fishing and proper fishing techniques. They will provide all the fishing gear needed plus life jackets so that the children can actually fish the restocked Twin Lakes.

The US Forest Service will be equipped with row boats in which to row the fishing enthusiasts out into Twin Lakes. They are also bringing back their popular fish prints.

Macaulay Fish Hatchery will be stocking the Twin Lakes on Thursday, June 11 around 11:30 a.m. The community is welcome to come out and watch. Approximately 10,000 smolts 7 to 10 inches in length will be released just in time for Family Fishing Day.

Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather. For further information, contact Anne Post (Alaska Department of Fish and Game) at 465-4320, John Wynn (Juneau-Gastineau Rotary Club) at 465-6264 or Carol Mahara or Thor Eide (U.S. Forest Service) at 586-8800.
