"The internet gives sex offenders an entirely new venue to hunt for new victims," said Wielechowski. "The legislation that was signed into law this afternoon erects one more barrier between our kids and the on-line predators that want to do them harm."
Wielechowski noted that Alaska has the highest rate of internet use in the nation and one of the highest rates of sex offenders.
SB 185 also gives judges the ability to require these offenders to wear electronic monitoring devices for the entire duration of probation or parole.
Representatives Andrea Doll and Bob Buch joined Senator Wielechowski at the bill's signing ceremony. Both lawmakers sponsored companion legislation in the Alaska House along with Representative Max Gruenberg.
