Sealaska Heritage Institute sponsors two art programs during Celebration: a Juried Art Show and Competition and a Native Artist Market.

Art Show and Competition

SHI will give awards for top contemporary and traditional art at its biennial Juried Art Show and Competition 4:30, June 4 at the Juneau Arts & Culture Center.

Thirty-nine pieces by 19 artists were selected by juror and artist Steve Brown for inclusion in the show, scheduled June 4-27.

Art entries will be judged in two categories: traditional and contemporary. Four awards will be given in each category as follows:

• Best of Show, $1,500

• First Place, $1,000

• Second Place, $750

• Third Place, $500

An opening reception of the show will be held on First Friday, June 6, 4:30-7 PM at the JAHC Gallery at the JACC.

Native Artist Market

SHI will sponsor a Native Artist Market June 5-7 at the Juneau Arts & Culture Center during Celebration. The 2008 market will offer Native art made by 45 Native artists. The market will be open for the duration of Celebration.

The goals are

• To support the perpetuation of Southeast Alaska Native art tradition with the quality and aesthetic forms that gave rise to its distinction

• To promote the production of those Southeast Alaska Native art forms which are endangered

• To encourage the creativity and evolution of Southeast Native arts

• To stimulate better craftsmanship

• To create a broader market for Southeast Alaska Native artists

• To protect the authenticity of Southeast Alaska Native arts by Native artisans

• To create a Native artist databank of Southeast Alaska Native artists
