JUNEAU - The Alaska Region Forest Service has just released a new map, the first updated version since 1997. Just like the previous version, the new map is printed on plastic, so it is waterproof - but the new map features a lighter-weight plastic, so it is not as bulky as the older version.
The map covers an area from Bishop's Cove south of Juneau, north to Echo Cove, and includes the northern half of Admiralty Island, Mansfield Penninsula and Point Retreat. It features new trails as well as some trail changes. Members of Juneau's Trail Mix group assisted in gathering Global Positioning System data for the map, so trail positions printed on the map are highly accurate. The map also includes hill shading, another new feature.
The new Juneau Area Trails Map is available for $10 at the Juneau Ranger District, Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, and the Regional Office in the Federal Building during regular business hours. For details, contact Julie Speegle at 789-6246.
