Photo: Former Juneau resident assists Chinese displaced by earthquakes
Michael Dixon (right), a former Juneau resident of 25 years now living in Xian, China, recently set up a tent hotel in honor of the late Boat Broker writer and Juneau Alpine Club co-founder Barbara Turley. About 20 people were killed in Xian by the earthquakes. Even though the city is 500 miles from the epicenter in Sichuan Province, many residents fled to the streets and spent the night in parks and along roads. Members of the Devil's Club Brigade, which Dixon founded in modeled after the JAC, provided five tents along with sleeping pads and sleeping bags for people to use during a period of three nights. Couples with young babies who might be most affected by the cold and rain were sought out first.
