KAKE - Kake celebrated the 13th Annual "Honoring Our Elders" community potluck on Saturday, May 8. The Healing Heart Council of Kake has been hosting the Honoring our Elders and Honoring Our Veterans potluck since 1997.
The Healing Heart Council is a group of concerned citizens and caregivers who share a common vision of living in a healthy community by promoting cultural and traditional activities. The group's mission statement is to promote respect of self, family and community.
The Healing Heart Council raised $1,760 to purchase jackets for the veterans of Kake. The jackets were presented to the veterans at the May 8 "Honoring Our Elders" dinner. The majority of the veterans honored were Elders.
Each jacket carries a design on the back with an eagle and a raven on each side of the American flag with a paddle beneath the flag showing the branch of service of each veteran. The beautiful and meaningful design was created by Milton Kadake, who gave the design to the veterans.
The Healing Heart Council will raise more money to buy jackets for the veterans who did not receive one on May 8.
The council issued the following statement: "We love, honor and respect our veterans. They not only sacrificed their time in the service, they were willing to sacrifice their lives for us. We will never forget that."
