Please briefly describe your business.
I am a massage therapist. I provide the service of therapeutic massage techniques including: Myofascial release, Neuromuscular Therapy and Swedish massage.
When did your business begin? Did you see a niche to fill, is there a story behind it?
I have been a massage therapist since 1998. I moved to Juneau in 2005 and have worked with several chiropractors in Juneau and contracted through other massage practitioners' offices. I decided to open my own office and have been in business for myself since the fall of 2010.
What is your business's mission, and how do you work to achieve this?
My mission is to provide my clients with high quality therapeutic massage to help alleviate pain and discomfort from work and sports-related injuries. Also, my aim is to educate my clients about lifestyle changes, including exercise and mindful posture practices that can help improve one's ability to perform.
Do you provide service(s) to all of Southeast Alaska?
I have performed massage in other Southeast Alaskan communities including Skagway and Gustavus, but I do not provide regular service in those communities. I do, however, have clients from other Southeast communities who visit when they are passing through Juneau.
Do you provide web sales?
I currently do not provide web sales. In the future I hope to have a web page that clients can visit to view my schedule and book appointments.
What are your biggest triumphs?
I have spent the last three seasons doing massage on Russian ice breakers in Antarctica and in the Canadian Arctic. In the last 12 months I have performed Therapeutic massage below the Antarctic Circle, above the Arctic Circle and in Beaufort 9 storms while crossing the Drake Passage.
What are your most common hurdles (i.e., shipping)?
The most common hurdle I face is changing people's perception of massage as being a simple luxury of relaxation. Massage can be very therapeutic and can help relieve chronic pain.
What work practices do you try and maintain in order to serve the community the best that you can?
I keep a very flexible schedule so that I can be available to book appointments at a moments notice.
What might encourage local residents to visit your business, rather than ordering something from a non-local business?
My business is a local business.
What are your favorite things about your business?
My favorite thing about my business is that my clients are always glad to see me and often tell me how much they have been looking forward to their appointment.
Are there any interesting facts or information that the community might not know about your business?
Although I do specialize in therapeutic modalities of massage, I also provide Swedish massage for those seeking relief from work and life related stress.
Where do you see your business in 5, 10 years?
I plan to continue my education in the field of therapeutic massage and possibly Rolfing in order to widen my knowledge base and provide the community with more choices in their search for alternative healing methods.
