'All Things Eagle and Raven' exhibit opens

JUNEAU - The Juneau-Douglas City Museum will open its summer exhibit, "All Things Eagle & Raven," on Juneau Museum Day, May 15 with a free public reception from noon to 5 p.m. This exhibit is a celebration of these two birds and their connection to our lives.

Exhibit panels will highlight the life cycle, size, weight and flight of eagles and ravens and explain how they see. Unique attributes of ravens such as their social networking and caching abilities will be explored. Eyesight, hunting and flight of eagles will be explained. A life-size replica of an eagle and raven's nest will be on exhibit with information about mating, nesting and parenting habits. Eagle and Raven Tlingit phrases supplied by Sealaska Heritage Institute will also be displayed, as well as Northwest coast art, eagle and raven objects, and contemporary art from the museum's collection.

As part of the Juneau Museum Day celebration and opening of "All Things Eagle and Raven," the museum will be open free of charge and host the following special events: dance group leader Carolyn Noe and Yees Ku Oo will perform an eagle and raven song at noon and 4 p.m. From 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., Blueberry, a common raven from the Juneau Raptor Center, will greet museum visitors with handler Sandy Harbanuk. Children will be able to make their own raven or eagle hat at our activity table throughout the afternoon.
